All Saints Church, Newland

All Saints Church, Newland, traditionally and affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Forest, dates back to the early 1200s. King John appointed Robert of Wakering as first Rector in 1216. The original building was much smaller than the one we see today. Subsequent building in the 14th and 15th centuries greatly enlarged the church, including a chantry chapel donated by Edward I in 1305. There is an interesting collection of tombs in the church including that of Robert of Wakering and it is also home to the Miners Brass, a symbol of the Royal Forest of Dean. The church is also home to some of the beautiful Beryl Dean Tapestries which in themselves are well worth a visit. POST CODE: GL16 8RH
